SPS Today: Fall of Champions

Football
Under the lights at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Mass., on November 15, a 35-20 victory over Dexter Southfield School in the Dave Coratti Bowl vaulted the SPS football team to a 9-0 record. The win ensured a second consecutive unbeaten season for Coach Craig Vandersea and his charges. Team defense was stingy for the Evergreen League champ-ion Big Red, which allowed only 10.6 points per game during the season. The offense, led by 6'7" UCLA-bound quarterback Parker McQuarrie ’20, put up 325 points in nine games. McQuarrie earned a QB rating of 117.3 for the season, completing 44/77 passes for 809 yards, eight touchdowns, and only two interceptions. Running back Malcom Bussey ’21 provided a perfect complement in the backfield, carrying the ball 123 times for 1,436 yards and 22 TDs. Joey Corcoran ’20 was the team’s most versatile player, with four TDs on offense, three punt returns for TDs, and four inter- ceptions on defense, while Isaac Anderson ’20 (15 receptions, 390 yards, 4 TDs) and Austin Hiscoe ’21 (21 receptions, 4 TDs) were other offensive standouts. Thomas MacEachron ’20 (53), Jake Rothmann ’21 (52), and Tighe Hoey ’21 (52) led the team in tackles. Max Van Fleet ’21 led the team in sacks with nine. SPS completed the season ranked ninth in the northeast, and will carry its 19-game winning streak into 2020.

Field Hockey
St. Paul’s went 9-7-1 overall in a field hockey season that included many fierce battles and a Lakes Region title. The Big Red outscored opponents by a 44-26 margin and recorded shutouts in four of the team’s final five games. Amanda Sudnik ’21 led the scoring charge with 13 goals. Eliza Farriss ’20 (6g, 5a), Ellie Neel ’20 (4g, 4a), and Tessa Demain ’23 (5g) were the other top offensive contributors. The Big Red defense thrived as well, with St. Paul’s holding opponents at bay, despite more than 60 defensive corners over the course of the season. Andrea DelGiudice ’20, Emmy Ekstrand ’22, and Carlee Smith ‘22 were among the defensive standouts in front of goalie Morgan Cheney ’20. DelGiudice, Farriss, Neel, and Maya Maloney ’21 were named Lakes Region All-Stars.

Boys Cross Country
St. Paul’s finished first of 11 teams at the Lakes Region Championship, placing four runners in the top 10. Clemens Herfarth ’22 (16:32) led the way for the Big Red in second, Alex Taylor ’21 was third (16:53), followed in fifth and sixth by Charlie Anderson ’21 and Finn Sias ’20. At the November 9 New England Championships at Northfield Mt. Hermon, SPS finished fifth out of 15 competitors. Herfarth was the top SPS finisher, placing eighth (16:44). He was followed by Taylor (17:44, 25th), Anderson (17:59, 32nd), and Sias (18:05, 35th). SPS compiled a record of 15-2 on the season. Anderson, Sias, Taylor, and Herfarth were named Lakes Region All-Stars. Herfarth also earned All-New England honors.

Girls Cross Country
SPS (13-7) captured the Lakes Region Championship in girls cross country at home on October 30, finishing with 10 points and edging nearest competitors Dublin (17) and Holderness (19). Caroline Light ’22 paced all runners with a winning time of 20:35. Margaret MacMillan ’21 (21:15) took fourth, Kate Taylor ’23 (21:30) followed in fifth, Bristol Fales-Hill ’21 (22:34) was 12th, and Ariane Bretl ’20 (22:39) earned 13th place. Fourteen members achieved personal bests at the championship meet. Light (20:57, 15th) earned All-New England honors, while MacMillan (21:19, 25th), and Taylor (21:44, 34th) were other top finishers. Light, MacMillan, and Taylor were named Lakes Region All-Stars.

Volleyball
The Big Red Volleyball team went 12-7 and finished sixth in Class A New England play. Under Coach Scott Reynolds, SPS qualified for the NE Tournament for the 11th year in a row, falling to Loomis in the quarterfinals. Injuries and struggles at times on offense required team members to step up throughout the season. All-NEPSAC player Mina Oates ’20 set the standard for liberos in her four years at St. Paul’s. Oates earned 143 aces, 68 kills, 84 assists, and 1,057 digs. In her four-year career, opposite hitter Jackie Shen-Yi ’20 (All-NEPSAC honorable mention) recorded 47 aces, 175 kills, and 59 blocks. The versastile Olivia Li ’20 finished her career with 35 aces, 143 kills, and 31 blocks. Third Former Sarah Hu was a big contributor and has a bright future, while fellow varsity newcomers Marian Enders ’22, Lillian Cassidy ’22, Anna Samel ’22, and Charlotte Kinlin ’22 also made immediate contributions to the team. A host of returning players should keep SPS in contention for the New England Tournament.

Girls Soccer
The Big Red girls varsity soccer team finished at 7-8-3. Led by captains Reed Cole ’20, Isabelle Coleman ’20, Ella Stewart ’20, and Ginger Prevost ’20, SPS beat former ISL rival Groton and tied Lawrence and St. Mark’s. The Lakes Region title came down to a 1-0 loss to Brewster. Teaghan Casey ’23 received the Coaches Award and Natalie Tulchinsky ’20 was named Defensive Player of the Year. The Leadership Award went to Coleman, who missed only one game as a four-year starter. Kristina Allard ’22 and Avery Barton ’23 were named All-Lakes Region. Lauren Legler ’21 was selected to the NEPSAC Junior All-Star Game. Ginger Prevost ’20 was an honorable mention Class A All-New England selection.

Boys Soccer
After a challenging start, the boys soccer team went 4-2-1 in its final seven games of the season to finish the campaign at 5-9-2 overall. One of the highlights of the season was a convincing 4-1 win over Deerfield Academy in front of a spirited SPS nighttime crowd. Sixth Form co-captains Brenner Morton and Kenny Ziniti, as well as fellow Sixth Formers Ben Jenkins, Adrian Wong, Jack Light, Andrew Kim, Taiyo Olorode, and Erik Hoets, provided leadership and positive attitudes throughout the season. Jenkins, who led the team in scoring (11g, 5a), and Nick Case ’21 were named Lakes Region All-Stars. Jenkins also joined Ronaldo Cabral ’21 (3g, 5a) as a Western NE Prep School Soccer Association All-Star. Cabral also garnered an invitation to the NE Prep School Soccer Association Junior All-Star game, while Morton earned a spot in the NE Prep School Soccer Association Senior All-Star game and was also named an honorable mention All-NEPSAC selection.
